About Me

José Val bal

I was born in the south of Spain, and from an early age I knew it was too small of a place if I was meant to dream big.

I received my BA in English Philology from the University of Granada (Spain) and I spent one year at Ottawa University as an international student. There I started taking photographs and videos, propelling me to have a camera stick to my hand. After graduating I spent a year teaching Spanish at Occidental College (Los Angeles, USA), where I studied my first courses in cinematography because I had free tuition. When I came back to Spain, I worked at an international non-profit and saved money to shoot my first documentary in India, Green Water.

In 2010 I was awarded the Talentia Fellowship from the regional government of Andalucía. Equivalent to the Fullbright Scholarship, it sponsored my MFA in Filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. So I moved to the US and spent there three years, where I studied and worked in the film industry. I served popcorn to keep my visa, which helped me work as a cinematographer in indie films in LA, and climb to the programming department of Arclight Hollywood, where I learned the other side of the film business.

In 2014 I moved to China with Lisa Zi Xiang, my fellow filmmaker and the love of my life, not before we spent a few months photographing Europe. In 2016 we founded Acorn Studio in Spain, a production company that allows us to get our projects done. In 2018, we produced Lisa’s debut feature, “A Dog Barking at the Moon”, which was selected at the 69th Berlinale, and awarded the Teddy Award Special Jury Prize. In 2020, I directed my first feature, “Ombligo”.

I also work for third-party productions as a cinematographer and cameraman.

And we keep on doing our thing.
